Zira (football club)

„Zira»(Azerb. Zirə Futbol Klubu) is an Azerbaijani football club from the suburb of the capital of the country of the same name, Baku. Founded on July 28, 2014. He plays home matches at the Olimpiyskiy stadium with a total capacity of up to 1,500 spectators.

Since 2015, it has been taking part in the Premier League, the top division of the Azerbaijani football championship (the reserve team „Zira-2″ plays in the First Division). The team became the of the Azerbaijan Championship 2015/16 season.

Story

The Zira team, created in 2014, made its debut in the Azerbaijan Championship as part of the First Division tournament in the 2014/15 season, where it took the final fifth place. In view of the fact that the teams that took the first four places in the First did not manage to pass the club licensing procedure necessary to participate in the elite tournament, the club received the right to debut in the Major League next season, since it met all the requirements of the Federation … Thus, „Zira» became the 58th team that took part in the top division of the Azerbaijani championship.

The debut season for the newcomer of the tournament turned out to be quite successful: the team immediately imposed a fight for the top line of the tournament table. As a result, the first season at the highest level brought the team second place in the tournament standings and a silver medal. Despite the successes in the national championship, the club could not get a ticket to the European cups for the next season, as UEFA prohibits clubs with less than three years of history from participating in European competitions.

In the 2016/17 season, the team took the final fourth place and secured the right to participate in the 2017/18 season in the second year of participation in the top division.

Stadium

The team plays home matches at the Olympic stadium in the village of Zira, a suburb of Baku. The arena can accommodate about 1,000 spectators. The stadium was commissioned in April 2012.
